Han Dongfang: Labor Issues in China
April 6, 2013 @ 1:15 pm - 3:00 pm
Han Dongfang is a keynote speaker at the 2013 Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit. He will address labor issues in China.
Labor tensions have become a much talked-about issue with an increasing interest in the relationship between globalization, world sweat factories, and consumerism. In recent years, U.S. media is putting spotlight on the working conditions at the factories of Apple’s global partner and biggest manufacturer Foxconn. We think world labor issues arising from the increasingly globalized market and mounting consumerism have not been sufficiently addressed with campus lectures, classes, or activism.
Recipient of numerous international awards, including the 1993 Democracy Award from the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy, Mr. Han Dongfang is an advocate for China labor rights based in Hong Kong. He was an instrumental figure in the first non-state organized labor union in China. Han Dongfang and his team at the HK-based China Labor Bulletin which he co-founded have been working closely with migrant workers, labor union leaders, and various NGOs to help fight for labors’ rights in China, and Foxconn has been one of their focuses. The organization also focuses on legal issues and working environment of child labor and female workers. Apart from his involvement with China Labor Bulletin, Han Dongfang also speaks regularly at the Radio.
The event is co-sponsored by the Duke East Asian Nexus Student Organization.
