Study Human Rights

Human rights is more than a practice; it is also an emerging field of study with a growing literature, archives and critical debate. At Duke, we see human rights through both optics: a way of being active in the world and a view and methodology that should be actively and critically examined. Currently, the Duke Human Rights Center is developing a certificate in human rights that will be available to undergraduates. The certificate will include service-learning, where students are placed with human rights organizations as part of their studies, and research on human rights issues or groups. The certificate will also require students to study a particular region or historical period. Currently, Duke undergraduates can create their own human rights concentrations through Program II, a self-designed interdisciplinary major.
