Sydney McAuliffe is a rising senior from West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a Robertson scholar majoring in International Comparative Studies and minoring in Arabic. She is passionate about human rights, women’s issues and social justice, and is interested in one day pursuing a career that combines all her passions. At Duke, Sydney is a member of the Duke Honor Council and is founder of Mussar at Duke, a program focused on Jewish ethics and spirituality. This summer, Sydney will travel to Washington DC, Israel and Palestine to conduct fieldwork-interviewing women involved in peace organizations. The research will explore the role of women in Israeli, Palestinian and international peace organizations and take a comparative approach to examining their individual interests, goals and actions in the Israeli-Palestinian peace-building process. Through this research project, she hopes to learn more about both the current role women play in the Israeli Palestinian peace-process and also examine ways in which women can more effectively engage in all areas of peace-building.
