Zoie Diana is a first year Master of Environmental Management candidate pursuing a certificate in Community Based Environmental Management at Duke University. She received her Bachelor of Science from Allegheny College in 2014 with a double-major in Environmental Science and Philosophy.

This summer, Zoie will work in Lowndes County, Alabama with the local nonprofit Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise (ACRE) and local education and community leaders. ACRE addresses the lack of proper wastewater sanitation in an estimated 53% of households in Lowndes County, AL in order to protect the human right to sanitation, and fight the wider environmental racism and injustices in this area. Zoie will be utilizing participatory action research to create a lesson plan about water and sanitation issues that she will work to implement in Lowndes County schools over the next year. Zoie will conduct field research this summer in Lowndes County and will work on this project the following year for the Community Based component of her Master’s Project.
